WhatsApp - What is this app?

The next time you think of sending an SMS to a friend, lover or even your teacher, think again. There was a time when sending SMSes through mobile phones were considered the "primary" method for communicating with others. Now, things have changed. The rise of IM (Instant Messaging) apps have caused a considerable loss for telecom operators worldwide since these apps are solely dependent on the internet service available on your phone. It is cheaper, easier to use and very user friendly.

WhatsApp Inc, based in California created this application in 2009. It is a cross platform instant messaging app that serves the simple purpose of messaging others through a smartphone or even a normal phone. You can send photos, audio files, chat in groups and send video files too. An estimated 10 billion messages are handled per day by the company as of August 2012. The app has been a huge success owing to its availability on almost all platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone, S60, S40 and Blackberry OS. Quoting the Financial Times, WhatsApp "has done to SMS on mobile phones what Skype did to international calling on landlines." And it is true. Why? Numbers and statistics show. WhatsApp is one of the top most downloaded free app on the Play Store (more than 50 million downloads) and is also a huge success on the iOS!
But here's the catch. For you to start enjoying the endless capabilities of this app, the person you are messaging must have WhatsApp installed in his/her phone to receive your message(s). Once that is done, you both, or even a group of people can begin chatting using WhatsApp.
Here are a few reasons that may prompt you to start using this app:
  1. Easy to install and set up
  2. User friendly User Interface
  3. The App is beautifully designed and runs smoothly, mainly on Android and iOS
  4. It is cross platform and does not charge you like sending an SMS would, it is comparatively cheaper
  5. It is available for your phone! Built for every mobile platform.
WhatsApp has changed the way people send messages to each other everyday, making people choose IT over the ordinary SMS system. WhatsApp is a good app, as far as my view is concerned and it is making communication a whole lot easier and enjoyable. Sure it has it cons, and there are many people who without second thoughts would prefer using other apps, or simply SMSes. This is just another app that has drawn the attention of people worldwide.
